The Smile: Made with North American Hardwoods

When people acthe-smile-alison-brooks-london-design-festival-2016_dezeen_2364_col_9ross the globe think about North American Hardwoods, they often think about flooring, cabinets, moldings and furniture. The 2016 London Design Festival might change all of that. Architect Alison Brooks has built a structure that demonstrates that American Hardwoods are not only attractive, but strong. The Smile, as seen in the picture to the left, was created using cross-laminated tulipwood (poplar). This North American Hardwood product was used instead of the traditional softwood by Brooks, a team of engineers, and the American Hardwood Export Council. The end product is a marvel to be seen. The London Design Festival is held at Chelsea College of Art in southwest London. The Smile can be visited there until October 12, 2016. Photography courtesy of :
