Expanding our Operations in Bowling Green

Concrete pad for expansion
Concrete pad for expansion

When we acquired our Bowling Green, KY facility in the second quarter of 2014, we knew that there were improvements that we would make to that campus on short order. Most of 2014 was spent putting those plans together, and at the end of January, construction began. Our expansion in Bowling Green includes additions to two of our buildings, a revamp of our green stacker line, and the addition of a planer line to allow us to surface and better sort our kiln dried hardwood lumber. At MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company, we are driven to meet our customers’ specific needs. We strive to produce top-quality hardwood lumber in the timeline our customers need it. And, we work tirelessly to do this in the most efficient and effective way possible. We believe that the additional space and improved production lines will not only allow us to serve our customers well but will also allow us to take our customer service, efficiency and quality to the next level. If we can serve you out of our Kentucky, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin facilities today, give us a call at 800-657-6990. We are here to meet your hardwood lumber needs!

Wintertime in the Lumber Industry

Logging in the snow
Logging in the snow

We are deep in the grip of wintertime weather at all three of the MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company locations. On January 7th, 2015, temperatures peaked at -2⁰ F in Sparta, WI, 5⁰F in Brookville, PA, & 23⁰ F in Bowling Green, KY. At those temperatures, our employees who work in unheated buildings and forklifts put on an extra layer of clothing and drink a bit more hot coffee to make it through the chilly work day. While our employees are certainly affected by the harsh weather, they aren’t the only aspect of the Lumber Industry that is affected by the wintertime weather. Starting at the source, heavy snowfall and icy conditions can halt logging crews looking to cut timber. This has obvious affects upon lumber supply. Logs that do manage to get cut at the sawmill, often turn in to an ice cube of sorts–with the moisture content of green lumber so high, the moisture freezes the pack of green boards solid. This can present a challenge for any stacker crew who then has the job of prying the boards loose in order to put them up on sticks. Once green lumber is on sticks, the winter takes a toll again. The cold temperatures slow down the natural air-drying process for packs of stickered green lumber on concentration yards throughout the country. Keeping kiln temperatures at an optimal temperature for drying lumber is also a bit more challenging when the temperature of the air surrounding the boiler pipes and kilns plummets. Lastly, cold weather just plain takes a toll on equipment. From the stacker line to the boilers and from highlifts to the flatbed trucks that customers’ orders are loaded on to, the wintertime weather has the potential to cause havoc. Delays due to snow, breakdowns and frigid temperatures are to be expected in December, January, and February. Fortunately, for customers of MacDonald & Owen Lumber, we are not strangers to the cold. With our corporate headquarters in the heart of Wisconsin, we know how to overcome what the wintertime weather throws our way. We know how to handle ice cube-like packs of green lumber. We know how to regroup when a flatbed truck can’t pick up due to icy roads. We know how to keep our products turning through the kilns despite Mother Nature. And, by the way, our sales team knows how to stay cozy warm at their desks waiting to reply to customers’ calls and emails looking for product. Give one of our sales representatives a call today at 800-657-6990. They’d love to beat the cold with a hot s

MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company opened its doors in 1968 with the intent of servicing the local region with hardwood lumber. Little did Archie MacDonald know that his small, Sparta-based company would grow and stretch to the rest of the globe. In 2014, we shipped lumber to the following countries: Belize, British West Indies, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, United Kingdom and Vietnam! A far cry from just under 50 years ago. To these countries, we shipped over 5.5 million board feet (bf): that covers over 11 football fields, board to board! Of that total, 2.2 million bf shipped to China and 2 million bf to Vietnam. Exports sales account for 16% of our overall sales in 2014, with expectations of hitting 25% by the end of 2015. Stick with us; we’re going places!

The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce honored South Central Kentucky businesses with awards and accolades at their annual Targeted Business & Industry Awards Banquet, held during the region’s Business and Industry Week. This celebration recognizes and salutes targeted businesses and industries throughout the region for their contributions to growing the local economy. In 2014, South Central Kentucky saw a total of $202.6 million in investments and the creation of 413 new jobs, which has greatly impacted the region. According to Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson, “Kentucky has now recovered and exceeded the state’s economic losses suffered during the Great Recession. In fact, in August, jobless rates were down in all 120 counties across the Commonwealth.” M&O has contributed considerably to these gains since the acquisition of its third facility in Bowling Green, investing 3.5 million dollars and creating 14 new jobs within the first 6 months of operation. For this accomplishment, the Chamber honored M&O with the prestigious Newcomer Award. “Bowling Green is a community that has seen tremendous growth over the last several years. We look forward to the community’s continued economic growth in the future,” Abramson commented. M&O is excited and privileged to be a part of this area’s continued growth and prosperity!

Expanding in All Ways, Always: Shanghai Bound

Adam Hyer with some of our Chinese clients

Not only does MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company sell high-quality hardwoods domestically, but internationally at an increasing rate. In September, our International Sales Director, Adam Hyer, traveled half-way around the world to the Asian urban mecca of Shanghai, home of the Yangtze River, the largest building in the world, and the place to where we export a large amount of our hardwood lumber stock. The event was FMC Premium 2014, a large-scale lumber industry show, showcasing lumber suppliers and furniture accessories/materials vendors looking to do business in the Chinese market. Though we are able to conduct much of our business via internet, Hyer believes that there’s something to an in-person rendezvous. “Even though I had talked to some of the people previously, it’s different seeing someone face-to-face. There’s a personal connection built, and it sets a firmer foundation for stronger relationships in the future. It’s easier to relay sincerity and honesty in person than through typed words.” Hyer also gleaned more in-depth perspectives about the Chinese marketplace. “It was an invaluable opportunity to be able to ask questions and get opinions on trends and pricing from the people on the ground who live, see and work in this marketplace every day. I learned that even though we’re in the busy time of year for business in China, the market is a bit more cautious this year than last year due to political distress. We read about that in the papers, but hearing it from a customer who buys from us is completely different.” Between meetings and facility tours, Hyer was able to enjoy regional delicacies such as chicken feet, cucumber-flavored potato chips, and the majestic Shanghai skyline. “The people of Shanghai were accommodating and super friendly; they were excited to share their culture and way of life with those of us visiting. It was great.”

Buying Green Lumber for Brookville Yard

Buyer, Jack Monnoyer
Buyer, Jack Monnoyer

At the tender age of 16, Jack Monnoyer started his career as a lumberman pushing a broom after hours at a local lumber company. Today that lumber company goes by the name of MacDonald & Owen Lumber Co. and Jack has recently been moved in to the position of buyer. Jack has many years of buying & selling boards under his belt, and as of May, Jack has assumed the primary responsibility of keeping top-quality green lumber flowing in to our Brookville, PA yard. In preparation for this role, Jack has spent many hours on the road recently visiting mills and building relationships with vendors throughout upstate NY, PA, and Ohio. Keeping a facility that pumps out 10 million board feet of kiln dried lumber annually fully supplied with high-quality product is no small job. And, it’s a job that Jack takes very seriously. As a long-time lumberman, Jack understands the importance of meeting customer’s expectations in terms of quality. He understands that in order to get our customers the kiln-dried hardwood lumber they want, much effort must be put in to finding top-notch vendors to partner with as a source of our green material.
