Setting our sights on…

Now that the winter holidays are a few weeks behind us, M&O employees are back at it, setting their sights on 2017 goals. At M&O we set measurable expectations because we know that what we measure improves and we like to celebrate improvement. So with that in mind, M&O’s leadership has identified the following four goals that will guide employees as they navigate 2017:

  • $70 Million in Revenue
  • Turn inventory faster and more efficiently
  • Zero lost time incidents (we want ALL of our employees to be safe and injury free)
  • Improve overall employee engagement (making M&O a place our employees are proud to work and like so much so they’d even recommend us to a friend or family member.)

Employees at all four M&O locations will be challenged to assist in completing the above mentioned goals. It is sure to be an action-packed year and we would love for you to be a part of the fun! We look forward to the opportunity to serve you in 2017 and to celebrating our successes along the way. Please contact us today at or to see how we can meet your hardwood lumber needs.

Kiln Expansion Project to Bolster Sales out of Bowling Green, KY

The completion of recent updates to the green line at MacDonald & Owen’s Bowling Green, Kentucky campus created a more efficient facility, which is a win for M&O.  The higher efficiency of the green line quickly filled the air dry yard to capacity at 1.1 Million board feet and created an opportunity. This opportunity was the ability to increase overall volume produced at the KY facility. It was determined that this would be achieved by adding more kiln space on our campus.  Two new 55,000 board foot SII Kilns are in the process of being installed at the Bowling Green, Kentucky campus. The project is expected to take 10 weeks to complete with an anticipated completion date of February 28, 2017. The additional kiln space will increase lumber availability by an estimated 275,000 board feet per month.

MacDonald & Owen will be ready to meet the increasing needs of the domestic and international markets with our high quality Cherry, Hickory, Poplar and Red Oak. Contact us today at or to see how we can meet your needs.

The Smile: Made with North American Hardwoods

When people acthe-smile-alison-brooks-london-design-festival-2016_dezeen_2364_col_9ross the globe think about North American Hardwoods, they often think about flooring, cabinets, moldings and furniture. The 2016 London Design Festival might change all of that. Architect Alison Brooks has built a structure that demonstrates that American Hardwoods are not only attractive, but strong. The Smile, as seen in the picture to the left, was created using cross-laminated tulipwood (poplar). This North American Hardwood product was used instead of the traditional softwood by Brooks, a team of engineers, and the American Hardwood Export Council. The end product is a marvel to be seen. The London Design Festival is held at Chelsea College of Art in southwest London. The Smile can be visited there until October 12, 2016. Photography courtesy of :

Inspirational Leadership

Current and former employees of MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company alike know one thing for sure about the president and owner of MacDonald & Owen–David Twite cares about them. When a new employee joins the ranks of MacDonald & Owen, an employee profile is created to highlight the new employee’s personal interests, family details, and path to M&O. These employee profiles, which includes a picture of the individual, are shared with David so that he knows who is serving his company no matter whether they work under the same roof as he does in Sparta, WI or if they work in PA, KY or northern WI. David wants to know the names and faces of his team. He wants to take an interest in them. He wants to understand their background and future goals.

davidConsidering David’s unique approach to leadership as the president and owner of MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company, it is no wonder he was asked to speak on the topic of Inspirational Leadership at the Excellence in Leadership Seminar & Luncheon in early October. This seminar will be hosted in Oshkosh, WI and will be attended by business leaders from across the state. David will speak to attendees of this seminar about what Inspirational Leadership looks like on a day-to-day, practical basis. He will share stories of how he and his leadership team at MacDonald & Owen are strategic about the leadership of their teams. The seminar will also feature a recently-made video of M&O employees who speak to the inspirational culture of MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company.

Inspirational leadership is not something that every business leader can personify. Fortunately for the employees, customers and vendors of MacDonald & Owen Lumber Company, David Twite does. Excellent leadership is one of a handful of attributes that make M&O a great place to work and a great place to do business. We aim for inspirational in all that we do–it’s what drives us. And, fortunately, David provides a great example to follow.
